Workplace Safety Hazard

Lockout/tag out:

If you properly lockout/tag out by following the procedures, you can prevent severe injuries.

Example:

• One worker might go home after work with his lock on, and another worker may cut the lock on the next day
• Employees should use some sort of label in old equipment, which will secure a difficult lockout.
• rather than installing a chain for a lock in the place of the valve, a wire may cut easily may be used.

Even if the lockout/tag out procedures is followed properly, faulty equipment may cause failure.

If the procedures of the lockout/ tag out are violated can causes because of three reason.  

1.    Complacency

2.    Hurry to complete the work

3.    Being unfamiliar with the equipment

It is the role of the employer to provide appropriate training to employees on lockout/tag out and make sure whether they are capable to use it.

Chemicals:

Many of the chemicals are quite expensive and some workers may not know that they will need that chemical in future use. But this thing is hazardous and leads to severe damage. There might of a number of chemical tins in the shelf, many will have no use for it. Even a small 5 gram of either can become degradable and explore into a peroxide after many years.

Whenever an organization purchase chemicals, it should have limitation and control system in using it. also, they should know that what for the chemicals are brought and how and where it should be used before placing the order.

  

The expiry date of the chemical should be marked, and make use of it according to the date of disposal of it. Stockpiling huge cache of unwanted chemicals is illegal.  And it takes lots of amounts to dispose of the unwanted/expired large amount of chemicals. Another main hazard is transferring chemical from one container to another container.

Even if the workers feel comfortable being around the chemicals and have experience in working for years, the containers are supposed to be labeled under the hazcom standard.

Confined Spaces:

Confined spaces may create many hazards.

Number of tragedies involving confined space happened because of not conducting risk assessment by an employer/ manager

Fire may break out in a confined space atmosphere if there is no equipment used for a long period.

Many people go inside without the knowledge that it is a confined space and get collapsed because of the outside people getting distracted.

If risk assessment and permit to work process are done properly, these kinds of mishaps can be evicted.

It is better to say that if you don’t plan properly; plan for a disaster.
